The Managing the Budget Cycle micro-credential is presented from Illinois Association of School Business Officials through the online professional development platform, Illinois ASBOnline. Practitioners who participate can use this micro-credential process as a way to demonstrate their existing competency in this area in order to showcase their skills while earning a badge for their online social networks or signatures.

As of 3/8/2022, Managing the Budget Cycle has been approved as an Administrator Academy by ISBE. Please indicate in your course survey if you would like this course to count as an AAC.


If taken for PD Clock hours, 20 PD Clock Hours earned.

If taken for Academy credit, fulfills 1 AAC requirement + 6 PD Clock Hours.


The practitioner will be able to demonstrate a detailed understanding of budget management as it relates to the revenue streams, expenditures, cash flow, and communication. The practitioner will confidently have the skills to understand and create functional timelines and tasks for the budget cycle, which are key components for all who work with school finance.

 

The skills are all supported by the International School Business Management Professional Standards which also are guidelines for the Illinois Association for School Business Officials.

Timeline for Completion:

This micro-credential is asynchronous and on-demand. We encourage you to complete the required modules on your own schedule. We recommend you complete this in 12 months or less in order to avoid being marked as "Inactive." You will receive a monthly reminder from Illinois ASBOnline if you have any outstanding modules to complete.


Feedback Timeline:

Upon completing a module, your evaluator will be notified via email and will return your evaluation back with feedback in 4-7 business days. When that evaluation is returned, you will receive an email from noreply@iasbo-online.org with your pass/fail status and any feedback. Your evaluator is here to work with you throughout the micro-credential, so please review all feedback and consider making changes to work towards continual improvement of your approach and style. If you fail a module and need to resubmit, please revisit the Course Checklist, Overview Document, and Micro-credential rubric. Contact your instructor with any questions you may have.


About the Evaluator:

Evaluator for this module are:

  • Barry Bolek is a retired CSBO and Illinois ASBO PD Specialist. Barry served Highland Park Township High School District 113 for 15 years as the Assistant Superintendent of Finance. Barry currently is a professor for Concordia University where his major focus is working with their internship capstone courses. Barry was a teacher, coach, Director of Technology and Assistant Principal prior to becoming the Assistant Superintendent for the same district.  He has extensive knowledge on the Tax Levy Process and has presented on the Tax Levy as well as many other topics (Negotiations, Health Life Safety, Human Resources, Financial Projections and Data Collections to name a few) with Illinois ASBO for many years. He has presented at “Triple I” several times as well as Nationally at ASBO and at MIT. Barry’s passion in retirement is “giving back” to the profession by working with Illinois ASBO and Concordia developing online instructional and supportive educational video and curriculum. He also helps facilitate production of School Business 101 Videos at Illinois ASBO that support Superintendents, support personnel and CSBOs in the areas that are touched by School Business tasks and actions.  
  • Allen Albus is a retired CSBO and Illinois ASBO Past President. For 27 years, Allen served as the Chief School Business Official in several Illinois School Districts including, Valley View 365-U, Naperville 203, Lake Forest District 67 and Lake Forest High 115. Allen has also contributed to the profession by serving on the IASBO board from 1999-2006, including serving as the association’s President in 2004-05. As a certified LIFO instructor, he helped facilitate the IASBO Leadership Academy for over 10 years and served multiple terms on the ISDLAF and Northern Illinois Health Insurance Pool (NIHIP) governing boards. Upon retiring in 2016, Allen worked for Forecast5 Analytics as a Senior Manager for 6 years. He developed a micro-credential course for ASBO International, presented at many state and national conferences and finance seminars and has had several articles published.
